Brač, the Adriatic Island of Zlatni Rat Beach and Vidova Gora

Brač lies just over 12 km off Split, about 50 minutes by Jadrolinija car ferry to Supetar, the island's largest town. On the south coast, about 35 km away by road, Bol has Zlatni Rat, a pebble spit reaching up to about 500 m into the sea. Above it, Vidova Gora at about 780 m is the highest peak on any Adriatic island. Between Bol and Milna, the Blaca Hermitage, built into the cliffs by monks in 1551, is now a museum reached by a half-hour walk.

  • Car ferry Split–Supetar, about 50 min
  • Catamarans from Split to Bol, Milna and Sutivan
  • No trains or flights from Split
  • Brač Airport (BWK) near Bol, mainly summer

Why visit Brač

  1. Steady wind at Bol

The Maestral wind makes Bol a windsurfing and kitesurfing base. Mornings are usually calm; the wind picks up in the afternoon.

  2. Beaches beyond Zlatni Rat

Sandy Lovrečina near Postira has remains of an early basilica. Guides also name Lučice at Milna and Murvica near Bol.

  3. A working stonemasonry school

The school in Pučišća still teaches hand carving of Brač's white limestone, one of only three such schools left in Europe.

  4. A monks' museum in the cliffs

Blaca Hermitage keeps its original furniture, books, clocks and an old observatory. It is on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List.

When to go

  1. July–August

Hot and dry, often above 30°C. The busiest time, when accommodation can sell out. Best for swimming and beach days.

  2. Late June and early September

Still warm, with fewer crowds. The sea is warm enough to swim from about mid-June to mid-September.

  3. May and October

Pleasant temperatures and quieter villages, good for hiking and sightseeing. Expect more rain and the warm Jugo wind later in autumn.

  4. Winter

Mild but wet, with fewer services and some places shut. The cold Bura wind blows; snow is rare and mostly on Vidova Gora.

Practical tips

  • Catamarans take foot passengers only, so drivers must use the Split–Supetar or Makarska–Sumartin car ferries.
  • Strong Bura or Jugo winds can disrupt ferries and catamarans, so leave some slack in your plans.
  • Split Airport is about 30 minutes from the ferry port, so allow extra time to make your sailing in peak season.
  • Island buses meet ferries at Supetar and Sumartin, but a car or scooter makes Vidova Gora and inland villages far easier to reach.
  • Blaca Hermitage sells no food or drink, so carry water and sunscreen for the half-hour walk in.
